Dysphagia specialists James Curtis, PhD, CCC-SLP and Valentina Mocchetti, MS, CCC-SLP, from the Aerodigestive Innovations Research lab (AIR) and the Sean Parker Institute for the Voice (SPIV), present their original research at the 2023 annual meeting of the Dysphagia Research Society conference in San Francisco, California. Their novel research included a total of 4 poster presentations and one oral presentation.

Research led by Valentina Mocchetti, with collaborative efforts from by Drs. James Curtis (Cornell), Reva Barewal (Oregon Health and Science University), and Anaïs Rameau (Cornell), investigated the use of transitional foods as a method to improve swallowing efficiency in people with dysphagia.

Research led by Dr. Curtis, with collaborative efforts from by Valentina Mocchetti (Cornell), James Borders (Columbia), Avery Dakin (Columbia), Emilie Lowell (Columbia), and Drs. Anaïs Rameau (Cornell) and Michelle Troche (Columbia), included: (1) establishing normative references values for flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing; (2) validating a new method for interpretating endoscopic swallowing assessments; (3) assessment the effects of a novel swallowing treatment method, known as Respiratory-Swallow Training, on swallowing rehabilitation in people with Parkinson’s disease; and (4) validating the use of a new, low-cost device intended to measure respiratory muscle strength.
